Akron man found guilty for shooting, killing 4-year-old girl with assault rifle

AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County jury convicted an Akron man in the February shooting death of a 4-year-old girl after a fight with the child’s mother, prosecutors said.

Darnell Bitting, 32, was found guilty on murder and felonious assault in the slaying of Janaya Swain on Feb. 16 at about 10:30 p.m. on Mercer Avenue near Lawton Street, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers were called to the scene for a report of a shooting and found a 2008 Dodge Avenger with four girls, ages 3, 4, 6 and 7, inside of the car with their grandmother, Akron police said at the time.

The children’s mother, De’Azha Swain, said she pulled up to a Mercer Avenue home and got out to get belongings at the home.

She broke several windows when no one answered the door, police said. Bitting later fired a shot from an AK-47 assault rifle, striking and killing Janaya, authorities said.

She was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital where she died.
