Beyond The Game Sheet With Defenseman Matt Abt

Hockey players are very serious about their craft, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to have a little fun. This week, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Matt Abt gives us a glimpse into the lighter side of the sport. The team is celebrating past moments in honor of its 20th season. What’s a memory from your own career that stands out? Probably one of my favorite hockey moments was going to the NCAA Tournament (with RIT). We won our conference, and going to the tournament is pretty fun and exciting. If I remember correctly, you had to play the top overall seed one year. Yeah, that was actually Blueger’s team (Minnesota State-Mankato). We beat them, and they were the No. 1 seed. Do you ever give him a little ribbing for that? (Smiles) Yeah, we’ve chatted about it. You’re taking part in a dream 3-on-3 tournament. Which players from any era, are you recruiting for your squad? Maybe Bobby Orr, an old-school guy. (Wayne) Gretzky, being an Oilers fan. You’re actually the first person to take Gretzky this season, which is surprising. Really? That’s good — we’ll take him out there. Goalie, let’s go Grant Fuhr. I’m an Oiler guy. If players were allowed to have their own goal songs, which would you choose? I actually don’t know; I’m not good at naming songs. “Thunderstruck.” That’s a good one. I love AC/DC, too. Who was your favorite player growing up, and why? I liked Mike Modano and Jarome Iginla, actually. You’re a defenseman, but you still gravitated toward the forwards. Yeah. I mean, those guys were sick and buried the puck a lot. So, people tend to like that I guess. How does chirping in the college ranks compare to that in the pros? Well chirping in college, I guess you can say whatever you want and get away with it. Here, not so much. There are a lot of “tough guys” (in college). How would you describe your own chirping ability? I think I’ve gotten more quiet over the years. In junior, I was a loudmouth. College, yeah you could pretty much get away with anything. Here, it’s pretty much different. Contact the writer: tpiccotti@citizensvoice.com; 570-821-2089; @CVPiccotti on Twitter
