A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

___

GETTIN' CLOSE

Adrian Beltre has 2,998 career hits and is swinging a hot bat for Texas. He's 9 for 14 through four games of a nine-game homestand. The 38-year-old Rangers third baseman is on the brink of becoming only the 31st player in the 3,000-hit club. He'll next face Baltimore righty Kevin Gausman, who's 4-0 in his last six starts.

ROYAL RUN

Kansas City goes for its 10th straight win when Trevor Cahill makes his first start for the hard-charging Royals. Cahill was 4-3 with a 3.69 ERA when he was acquired this week from San Diego. The righty will be facing the Red Sox. He is 0-2 with a 7.79 ERA at Fenway Park.

BACK AND FORTH

After recently being overtaken by the Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers can go back into first place in the NL Central with a win over Chicago at Miller Park. Kyle Hendricks goes for the Cubs after a seven-week stint on the disabled list with right hand tendinitis. Junior Guerra starts for the Brewers.

ONE LAST LOOK?

Left-hander Francisco Liriano (6-5, 5.99) makes what could be his final start for Toronto when he takes on the Angels. He allowed two runs in five innings to beat Oakland in his last outing, and has been mentioned in trade speculation as Monday's deadline for making deals without waivers approaches.

NEW POP

Detroit lefty Matthew Boyd (4-5, 5.48 ERA) makes his first start since the birth of daughter Meira Joy Boyd on Thursday. He'll be at home against the Astros — righty Collin McHugh (0-0) is scheduled to open for the Astros. He returned last weekend for his first start of 2017 after being out with shoulder problems.
