Pickup Hits Ski Lift; Kills One, Injures Eight
BARTLETT, Ill. (AP) _ A pickup truck went out of control and slammed into the concrete base of a ski lift, killing one skier and injuring seven others, officials say.
Paramedic David Zamastil said the pickup ran through a crowd of 20 people and pinned four of them against the base of the chairlift at the Villa Olivia Country Club.
The driver of the pickup, James Scherzer, 65, of Elgin, was charged late Monday with reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, said Bartlett Police Chief William McHugh.
The dead youth was identified as Fasel Zubairi, 15, of Elk Grove Village.
Zubairi and Scherzer were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, as were seven other victims, most of whom were released after treatment. Two 14-year-old boys were admitted with broken legs.
Cece Rivera, ski manager at the Villa Olivia Country Club, said the truck had been traveling on a nearby highway when it ran into the club’s parking lot and onto the bottom of a slope where skiers were waiting for the chairlift.
Reidun Scarpinato, assistant manager of the country club, said the ski area was not particularly crowded at the time.
″It was a slow night, thank God,″ she said.
