MOSCOW (AP) _ Tests confirmed their claims that five Russian basketball players were given mineral water spiked with a medication to make them ill before a game in Athens last week, Russian officials said Friday.
Tests conducted by a Russian laboratory showed samples of mineral water drunk by the Central Army players before the game contained haloperidol, which causes cramps, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.
The team physician said on television that the bottles of mineral water left in the lockerroom ``had evident traces of a hypodermic needle.″
Five players were taken to a hospital with severe cramps, dizziness and nausea just before the European Champion Club Cup quarterfinals against Olympiakos on March 16.
The remaining five players suited up for the game but Russia lost, 79-54.
Greek health officials said urine and blood samples of the players hospitalized showed no traces of the medication..
