Morton Ranch looks to build on opening win
The Morton Ranch football team accounted for half of Katy ISD’s victories in Week 1, providing the most dramatic finish.
Junior Gabriel Garcia drilled a 34-yard field goal, his second of the game, with seven seconds remaining to lift the Mavericks to a 22-20 victory against Cypress Lakes. Morton Ranch won its season opener for the fourth consecutive year, including last year’s 36-17 triumph against Dobie.
The Mavericks led 16-0 at halftime after a safety and touchdown runs by Nazeem Khan and Jaelon Moorehead. The Mavericks’ defense held Cy Lakes to 146 yards. One of the Spartans’ touchdowns was an interception return.
Morton Ranch, which uncharacteristically finished 3-6 last fall, eyes a 2-0 start Sept. 7 against Cypress Ridge, looking for a sweep of Cy-Fair ISD opponents. The Mavericks close non-district play with two Houston ISD opponents in Westside and Sam Houston.
Cy Ridge finished 1-8 last year but opened this season with a 47-21 triumph against Cy Woods.
The Rams and Mavericks meet for the fourth time in five years, with Cy Ridge holding a 2-1 edge. Morton Ranch won 14-0 in 2014, with the Rams answering 35-26 and 35-30 the following two years.
