Marshall softball splits games in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Mya Stevenson’s walk-off home run in game one helped Marshall University softball split its Friday softball games at the Holy City Showdown.

The freshman connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-3 defeat of UMass-Lowell. Iowa State won the second game, 1-0.

Marshall (8-4) has Saturday games against UNC Wilmington (12:15 p.m.) and Charleston Southern (4:45 p.m.).


WILMINGTON, N.C. — Geordon Blanton, Shane Hanon and Tucker Linder each had two runs batted in Friday when the Marshall baseball team downed Iona, 9-8, in 10 innings at the Hughes Bros. Challenge.

Linder reached base on an error in the bottom of the 10th and Tucker Linder lead off the bottom of the 10th by reaching second base on an error and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Blanton hit into a fielder’s choice and Linder beat a throw to home plate.Blanton smacked his second homer of the season for the Thundering Herd (2-3).

Marshall plays Indiana State at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by another meeting with Iona at 6 p.m.
