Wedding Day Car Crash Kills Bridegroom; Bride Seriously Hurt

LIDO BEACH, N.Y. (AP) _ A limousine carrying a wedding party from the ceremony to the reception collided with another car, killing the bridegroom and best man and injuring five others, including the bride, police said.

Family members rushed to the hospital after the accident, which occurred outside the reeception hall about 6 p.m. Friday, moments after the wedding at St. James Church in Seaford.

″It was a pretty stressful, pretty emotional scene,″ said Ed Smith, a spokesman for Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow. ″Their parish priest came to help. They couldn’t even talk to anyone, they were so upset.″

The bridegroom, Peter Phillips, 21, of North Massapequa, and his 29-year- old brother and best man, John Phillips of Islip, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Surgeons today worked to save the crushed legs of the bride, Carol Zagorski Phillips, 24, of North Massapequa, who was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, Smith said.

Debbie Zagorski, 22, of North Massapequa, the bride’s sister and maid of honor, was in critical condtion with leg injuries and a gash in her forehead, Smith said.

The limousine driver and the driver and a passenger in the other car were hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said.

The crash occurred as the limousine was making a turn into the Sands Beach Club, said Nassau County police spokesman Officer Charles Koller.

Police did not immediately know how fast the cars were moving. No charges were filed, police said.
