EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Eli Stoddard passed for three touchdowns, including a 79-yard pass play to Husani Dillon for the winning score, as Butler outscored Evansville 38-35 Saturday.
The 73 points by the two teams was the most they've scored in 49 meetings, topping a mark of 69.
Stoddard completed 13 of 23 passes for Butler (4-4, 1-3 Pioneer Football League). The Bulldogs overcame a season-high 232-yard rushing effort by Sean Bennett, who scored touchdowns on runs of 40 and 22 yards and also caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Drew Purcell.
Bennett, who topped 200 yards rushing for the second time this season, had gone into the game third among NCAA Division 1_AA backs in scoring and fifth in rushing. He has 1,048 yards rushing and 92 points this season.
Naim Sanders had 184 yards on 34 carries for Butler, including a pair of 2-yard scoring runs.
Purcell completed 17-of-37 passes for Evansville, but was intercepted three times. His completions included a 76-yard TD toss to Vince Tweddell and a 12-yarder to Troy Pingsterhaus that ended the scoring with 2:07 to play.
The Purple Aces got the ball back once more, taking over with 1:10 to play after forcing Butler to punt. Purcell four passes as Evansville got to the Butler 29 with 11 seconds to play. After a timeout, Kyle Condon intercepted Purcell's pass at the goal line to seal the victory.
