FIRE LOOKOUTS

BOISE, Idaho - Mountaintop fire lookouts started appearing in the U.S. a century ago and have managed to remain a crucial component in the fight against wildfires. The number of fire lookouts peaked in the 1940s with as many as 5,000. But only about 400 working lookouts remain, mostly in the West.
