New in La Porte — a summer festival
La Porte’s Parks and Recreation department is planning a party in June complete with a car show, bands and activities for children.
“We’re going to introduce a new festival — a summer party,” said Bianca Cuccerre, recreation specialist for the city of La Porte. “It’s going to be called the ‘Summer Festival on Main.’”
On June 22, Main Street will be lined with food trucks while festival-goers mill around the booths hosted by vendors, listening to live music.
The opening act, El Grupo Alcanzable, will perform at 4 p.m., with The Slags coming onstage at 7 p.m. to perform cover hits from throughout the decades.
“We don’t have any Hispanic-geared event in our community; so we looked at it and realized that was something we were lacking,” Cuccerre said. “This is a way to share that heritage with everyone in a family friendly, fun and lively way.”
Cuccerre said the parks department noticed a blank space in the summer for a city festival.
“We do have a Mardi Gras festival in February or early March which is pretty successful, and we have a Christmas festival, which residents really like, but we started to realize that we don’t really have anything going on in the summer,” she said. “And that’s when it’s important to have something. Kids are out of school, parents are looking for something to do. So, we thought a festival like this would be perfect for families who aren’t necessarily leaving for vacation and want to do something but stay local at the same time.”
The event, which has free admission and will be from 4-9 p.m., will have activities for kids such as face painting and an art gallery where they can use sidewalk chalk.
Also planned is a car show with a prize for the People’s Choice winner.
“It doesn’t have to be a classic car — any cool car can enter,” Cuccerre said.
Another feature will be a watermelon-eating contest, with divisions for adults and for children.
