Former library administrator sues city over firing

January 2, 2019

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — A former library administrator who was fired in 2017 has filed a lawsuit against the city of Lawrence, claiming his dismissal was unwarranted.

The Eagle-Tribune reports a suit filed by former Lawrence Free Public Library assistant director Kemal Bozkurt claims the three warnings he received before he was fired were unsubstantiated.

Acting director Jessica Valentin cited Bozkurt for missing two staff meetings and for asking a staff member to work on a scheduled day off so he could take time off. Valentin said Bozkurt didn’t work well with others.

According to Bozkurt, Valentin didn’t help him improve his performance before he was fired. Bozkurt and 17 other employees resigned, retired or were fired during Valentin’s first year as director.

Mayor Daniel Rivera declined to comment on the suit.
