Boxer Nigel Benn Charged in Assault
LONDON (AP) _ Boxer Nigel Benn, former world middleweight and super-middleweight champion, was charged Thursday with causing grievous bodily harm for his part in a nightclub incident in September.
The 32-year-old boxer, who announced his retirement after losing to Ireland’s Steve Collins on Saturday at Manchester in a challenge for Collins’ WBO super middleweight title, was spending the night in police cells, Scotland Yard said.
He is to appear Friday before a London magistrates court.
On Sept. 29, Benn had gone out to a London nightclub to celebrate the birth of twins to his girlfriend Caroline Jones. After the incident businessman Ray Sullivan received 105 stitches after being struck on the nose, allegedly with a glass or ashtray.
Initially Sullivan, a former friend of the boxer, refused to press charges.
