Iverson, Rider Suspended by NBA
NEW YORK (AP) _ Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson and Portland’s Isaiah Rider were suspended by the NBA Friday for improper off-the-court behavior.
Iverson, who was rookie of the year last season, was suspended from this year’s regular-season opener because he pleaded no contest to a weapons charge in Virginia.
Rider was suspended for the first two games of the season because of his no contest plea in California to possession of illegal cellular phones and his conviction for possession of marijuana in Oregon.
``NBA players are obligated to conduct themselves according to the highest possible standards,″ commissioner David Stern said, ``and these suspensions should serve to remind everyone associated with the NBA that improper or unprofessional behavior, on or off the court, will be met with appropriate penalties.″
