Six Injured in Team Van Crash

November 22, 1996

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) _ Five players and a trainer suffered minor injuries Thursday when a van carrying the Central Washington University women’s basketball team skidded off a highway and rolled twice.

The team was headed to Portland, for its scheduled season-opening game against Portland State when the accident occurred Thursday morning.

The six were taken to a hospital for observation and X-rays, most complaining of shoulder or neck pain. All were treated and released, campus officials said.

Head coach Nancy Katzer was driving the university-owned van at less than 40 miles per hour, she said, when it hit a patch of ice.

``The back end started swerving and all of a sudden it took a hard left,″ Katzer said. ``I tried to get us straight, but we skidded back the other way. I yelled, `Hang on,′ and we went off the road.″

Thursday night’s game and Friday night’s contest against Seattle Pacific, also at Portland State, were canceled.
