BOSTON (AP) — Authorities began investigating the wide-ranging college admissions scheme involving coaches and wealthy parents after receiving a tip from an executive prosecutors were targeting in a securities fraud probe.

A law enforcement official said Thursday that the executive told investigators the Yale women’s soccer coach said he would label the executive’s daughter as a recruit in exchange for cash. The official was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

That tip set off a massive investigation that culminated Tuesday in the arrest of dozens of parents, coaches and others. The admissions consultant at the center of the scheme has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with authorities.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the source of the tip.
