Mother Charged with Killing Daughter While Administering Medicine

November 5, 1996

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) _ A woman was charged with killing her 17-month-old daughter while trying to get her to take some medicine, and an examination revealed that the little girl had been battered and even bitten.

Kenya Best, 24, was being held Monday and could face the death penalty if convicted.

The girl, Mahkeva Best, died Thursday shortly after Best and her boyfriend brought her to a hospital.

Makheva had severe bruises to the abdomen, two bruises to the head, two broken ribs, internal bleeding and a bite to her left leg. The bite marks matched the mother’s teeth, police said.

Best admitted tussling with her twice while giving her medicine, and was arrested Friday, police said.

She told police she had lost her job, and was under ``a lot of stress and very frustrated.″

The Connecticut Legislature last year added the killing of a person under 16 to the list of crimes eligible for the death penalty.
