COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) _ Whitney Floyd threw her 27th complete game of the season, a seven-hitter, as California beat Southwestern Louisiana 2-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Tournament on Thursday.
The junior left-hander matched her season high with seven strikeouts as she handed the Lady Cajuns only their fourth shutout in 54 games.
California opened the scoring in the second inning when Jessica Parker doubled and scored on a single by Katie May.
The Golden Bears added another run in the third. Megumi Takasaki had a leadoff single and advanced to second on Kirsten Drake’s sacrifice. Two batters later, Melanie McCart had a two-out run-scoring single to left.
Joni Podhorez had two hits for Southwestern Louisiana.
California advances to a winner’s bracket game against Pac-10 rival Washington on Friday night. Washington had a 7-1 victory over Princeton, which meets Southwestern in an elimination game.
