South Carolina bridge closed for repairs after cable snaps
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — It’s expected to take at least two days to repair a bridge near the South Carolina coast where a cable snapped.
Officials closed the westbound lanes of Interstate-526 Monday at the James B. Edwards Bridge over the Wando River near Mount Pleasant. The cable helps hold concrete blocks together.
Transportation department officials are conducting a review of the bridge that is expected to take two days. Depending on what engineers find, the bridge could be closed longer.
About 35,000 cars typically use the bridge each day.
Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie said commuters going to work, students riding school buses and truck drivers making deliveries to the Port of Charleston’s Wando Welch Terminal can expect longer trips.
He called for drivers in Mount Pleasant to be courteous and patient.
