South Mississippi city looks to annex nearby community
LAUREL, Miss. (AP) — A trial has begun for a south Mississippi city looking to annex an unincorporated community south of it city limits.
WDAM-TV reports the trial on Laurel’s annexation of the community of Pendorff began Tuesday in Jones County Chancery Court.
Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee says the city will show that services will be better if Laurel takes in the area. The city has promised 70 new fire hydrants, upgraded water and sewer lines and new police officers.
However, some Pendorff residents and the city of Ellisville are opposing the boundary expansion. They say Laurel has done a poor job of meeting upgrade promises in areas it has previously annexed.
Laurel has projected it would collect $3 million in new tax revenue from the area in five years.
