Oklahoma woman drowns after driving into flooded crossing
POTEAU, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a 64-year-old woman has apparently drowned after driving into a flooded creek in eastern Oklahoma.
Troopers say Vickie Darnell was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday morning after she drove her vehicle into a flooded crossing across Sugar Loaf Creek southeast of Poteau, about 166 miles (267 kilometers) southeast of Oklahoma City.
The patrol says the victim was apparently traveling alone when her vehicle was swept off the roadway at about 4:30 a.m. The victim’s body was recovered outside of the vehicle in the creek at about 7:40 a.m.
The Oklahoma Climatological Survey says severe storms dropped more than 2 inches of rainfall across the area overnight. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says standing water has forced the closer of several area roads and highways.
