New Jersey Priest Gets Probation
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ A New Jersey priest who admitted soliciting sex from a teenage prostitute in Montreal was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation.
The Rev. Eugene Heyndricks, 61, was also prohibited Thursday from being alone with children during that time.
Heyndricks’ attorney, Frank Pappas, said his client was not a pedophile and did not know at the time that the 16-year-old boy was underage.
Another priest, the Rev. William Giblin, 70, had been accused of helping arrange the meeting between Heyndricks and the teen, but the charges against him were withdrawn last month due to lack of evidence.
Giblin and Heyndricks both serve in the Archdiocese of Newark, and they have been on indefinite leave while church officials conduct their own investigation. Heyndricks said he planned to retire soon. Giblin, a former preparatory school headmaster, is a retired priest in residence.
