Minnesota man wanted in drug deaths arrested

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — A 21-year-old Minnesota man wanted in the deaths of two Mankato residents who overdosed on a dangerous synthetic drug was arrested in suburban Chicago on Monday, police said.

Blue Earth County sheriff’s deputies got a tip about Tyler Caputo’s whereabouts and a detective found him at his grandmother’s home in Harwood Heights, Illinois, The Free Press (http://bit.ly/1l7EX76 ) reported.

Police issued a warrant for his arrest earlier this month after he skipped three drug tests. He also failed to appear in court Friday.

Caputo posted a $190,000 bond after his initial arrest earlier this year. Under the conditions of his release, he was not allowed to leave Minnesota without permission and had to submit to random drug testing.

Caputo faces third-degree murder charges in the deaths of Chloe Moses, 17, and Louis Folson, 22, who overdosed on the dangerous psychedelic drug 25C-NBOMe in separate incidents in Mankato in March. He also faces drug charges. A criminal complaint against Caputo claims the drug was sold as LSD and changed hands several times before Moses and Folson got it.

Caputo’s attorney, Ryan Pacyga, said he doesn’t think the case rises to the level of murder and it’s understandable that Caputo was scared.

“It’s natural for a young man to be fearful when the allegations are as severe as they are in this case,” he said.

An extradition hearing will be held in Illinois before Caputo returns to the custody of Blue Earth County deputies in Minnesota.
