Students Paint Map of World on Basketball Courts
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Students from Howard Middle School play basketball all over the world - without leaving their back yard.
The school’s outdoor basketball courts are covered with a 10,282-square- foot map of the world, and the seventh-graders who painted it claim it is the largest in the world.
The idea came from teacher Glenn Anderson, who noticed that the Guinness Book of World Records listed an 8,272-square-foot painting on two tennis courts at a Tempe, Ariz., high school as the largest.
Anderson used the painting project as a learning tool, but that didn’t dampen his students’ enthusiasm.
″We found out that the world was a big place, and we found out that it takes a lot of people to make the world what it is,″ said Antoin Bivens, 12.
Besides, said Antoin, ″Making the map was fun because we got out of class.″
Even the basketball players have been forced into the learning game. Without any more foul lines on the courts, ″They’ll have to go by the continents,″ said Chanda Darby, 14.
