Barbara Burchill: Don’t get scammed

January 24, 2019

I received a call from my nephew who was arrested in Montreal, Canada, and desperately in need of some cash to get bailed out and return home. Except it wasn’t my nephew. The caller and the man who he said was his public defender sounded very sincere and believable; I can understand how people get sucked into these things. But if you receive a call like this, be very wary.

Red flags include:

• They tell you it’s urgent and they need the money right away

• They insist you wire money or mail cash

• They won’t give you a number to call back

• They don’t want you to tell anyone about it because they’re embarrassed about the situation

Don’t get scammed!
