Battle Creek man killed in accident

MADISON - A Battle Creek man died after an accident between an SUV and combine Tuesday night.

According to Sheriff Vern Hjorth, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident on Highway 275 west of Norfolk.

Upon arrival, they found that a westbound Dodge Durango driven by 68-year-old Douglas Rakowsky had collided with the rear of a John Deere combine driven by Mark Freudenburg of rural Madison.

Rakowsky was pronounced dead at the scene. The highway was shut down for approximately three hours.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue, Battle Creek Fire and Rescue, the Norfolk Police Division, State Patrol, and the Battle Creek Police Division also responded to the accident.

It remains under investigation.
