KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Mark A. Ernst, president and chief executive of H&R Block, was elected chairman of the board of directors Wednesday.

Ernst replaces Frank L. Salizzoni, who had announced in June that he would retire at the end of the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting.

``Mark’s vision for the company’s future, his successful leadership, and his ability to deliver results made him the best choice as chairman,″ said board member Roger W. Hale, chairman of the governance and nominating committee.

Salizzoni, who became chairman and CEO in September 2000 and has served on the board of directors since 1988, was responsible for developing the company’s strategy to expand into mortgage and accounting services. He retired as chief executive in December 2000, and Ernst replaced him.

Shares of Block closed slightly lower Wednesday at $51.30 on the New York Stock Exchange.
