Prosecutor Says Trial Will Be Held Before End Of Year
LYON, France (AP) _ The trial of Nazi Klaus Barbie will be held before the end of the year, the Lyon Public Prosecutor’s office said.
Barbie, called the ″Butcher of Lyon″ for his World War II Gestapo activities, was seized by French authorities in French Guyana in February 1983.
He was accused of being responsible for the deaths of thousands of French Jews and resistance workers in France.
Investigating Magistrate Christian Riss has built cases based on three incidents called ″crimes against humanity″ - the roundups of Jews at the headquarters of the Union of French Jews and at a holiday home at Izieu, and the organization of the last trainload of prisoners sent to concentration camps from Lyon in 1944.
