Truck strikes corner of building east of underpass
POCATELLO — A tractor-trailer struck the corner of the Southeast Idaho Council of Governments building, located by the intersection of First and Center streets, at 9 a.m. Monday.
The building was occupied but nobody was injured, including the driver, who police said followed bad directions on his GPS navigation system. The intersection is located by the east entrance to the Center Street Underpass, which was already closed for the Kind Community celebration.
The driver, who wasn’t identified, stopped the truck by a median that prevents traffic from continuing south on First Street after he failed in an attempt to turn east on Center Street. The collision destroyed the building’s awning and damaged siding, but staff continued to work afterward.
“It kind of sounded like one of the trains, but it just didn’t stop,” said Kristen Barrington, information and assistance supervisor at SICOG.
Barrington said a loud scraping noise persisted for about 30 seconds, and the building shook.
Pocatello police officer JM Weinheimer said trucks are not allowed in that area, and the driver will be cited with a traffic violation.
“GPS led him to this road, but GPS was wrong,” Weinheimer said.
