Laurel Arts’ First Night of Christmas this Friday
Laurel Arts’ First Night of Christmas will be celebrated from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Philip Dressler Center for the Arts, 214 S. Harrison Ave., Somerset.
Rhythms of Christmas will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday at Somerset Area High School.
First Night of Christmas will kick off with the announcement of the winners of the Holiday Design Scholarship Contest. Six area school districts participated by creating three-dimensional holiday decorations based on the theme “Toyland.” An Art Award, a Technical Award and a People’s Choice Award will be presented along with a few other surprises.
A brass ensemble from the Somerset County Community Band will play on the front porch from 6:30 until just before Santa lights the tree at 7 p.m. Santa will arrive courtesy of the Somerset Volunteer Fire Department. A quartet from the Roof Garden Barbershop Chorus will also perform during the evening. There will be refreshments available, arts and crafts projects for children, face painting and a special area where kids can meet Santa. The Christmas Craft Shoppe will be open for shopping.
The event is free to attend.
The next day, Laurel Arts will present its 12th annual Rhythms of Christmas, featuring Laurel Arts dancers and music by the Somerset County Community Band.
The show is free to attend, but donations to the Dorothy Dressler Scholarship Fund will be accepted. A reception will follow in the school cafeteria.
