Warming Center open Thursday and Friday
The Rochester Salvation Army will open its emergency Winter Warming Center today and Friday this week.
Homeless community members are welcome to the center at 20 First Ave. NE from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with service that includes a light meal, shower and laundry facilities. There will be cots for those who spend the night.
The Warming Center opens every time the temperature drops to zero degrees or below, with the goal of keeping vulnerable community members off the streets during dangerous winter temperatures. This year, the Warming Center has served an average of 38 people per night.
The low temperature overnight Thursday is forecast to reach 4 below zero, according to the National Weather Service. The Friday overnight low is forecast to be 2 degrees below zero.
Anyone interested in volunteering at the Warming Center should contact Alex Hurlebaus at 507-288-3663 to fill out a volunteer application.
