Williams Has Tough Match in Nice

NICE, France (AP) _ Venus Williams needed two tiebreakers in her opening match at the Terazura tournament Wednesday before beating Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6).

The top-seeded Williams, ranked No. 3, was playing her second tournament of the year, and she struggled against an opponent with a No. 30 ranking.

Williams reached the semifinals of the Australian Open last month before losing 6-1, 6-1 to Martina Hingis.

Williams had a bye into the second round in Nice and will meet Meilen Tu of the United States in the quarterfinals. Tu beat Spain’s Magui Serna 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-5.

Also Wednesday, fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia downed qualifier Camille Pin of France 6-3, 6-4.

Pin, of Nice, delighted the home crowd Tuesday by beating Tatiana Panova of Russia in the first round for her first win in a WTA Tour main draw match.

Seventh-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France, winner of last week’s Gaz de France in Paris, downed Sweden’s Asa Carlsson 6-1, 6-3.
