Former zoo director placed on pre-trial probation

September 26, 2018

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors have agreed to dismiss charges against the former director of a Massachusetts zoo as part of a pre-trial probation agreement.

Citing court records, the Sun Chronicle reports the agreement requires 59-year-old Jean Benchimol to stay out of trouble for six months.

Benchimol, the former director of the city-owned Capron Park Zoo in Attleboro, was charged in February with obtaining drugs by fraud and unlawful possession of drugs.

Prosecutors say she fraudulently obtained animal medications, including flea and tick medicine and antibiotics for dogs, by using the zoo veterinarian’s Drug Enforcement Agency number without authorization. She paid for the medications with a personal credit card.

Benchimol says she bought the medications for dogs she fostered.

She retired from the zoo two months after her arrest.
