Macedonian police charge 11 people with smuggling migrants
SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) — Macedonian police have filed charges against 11 people for smuggling migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Ghana.
In nine separate cases police discovered a total of 88 illegal migrants in private vehicles, transiting from Greece to Serbia. Some were caught entering Macedonia from Greece and others on Macedonia’s border with Serbia.
Most of the migrants were from Syria.
Police said in a statement Saturday that migrants were asked to pay from 50 to 200 euros each for the transfer.
An investigative judge has ordered custody for eight of the suspects. The migrants were taken to a special shelter for migrants in the capital Skopje.
Two of the suspects are Greek nationals, one is Serbian and another has Bulgarian citizenship. The rest are Macedonian nationals.
