NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a shooting death last year.

The Natchez Democrat reported Tuesday’s plea by 20-year-old Harry Smith Jr. of Natchez came as he was about to stand trial for attempted murder in another shooting last year.

A jury had been chosen for Smith’s trial on charges of shooting and injuring Clifford Payne III in January 2017.

The second-degree murder plea came in the Oct. 1, 2017, shooting death of 34-year-old Richard Frazier as he sat in his vehicle in Natchez. That shooting came on a day that a number of people fired random shots through the city from the back of a truck.

Second-degree murder is punishable with a sentence between 20 and 40 years. Smith’s sentencing is set Monday, Nov. 19.
