Free saplings will be distributed at ‘Celebration of Trees’ event in Bradford Woods

October 2, 2018

The Bradford Woods Conservancy is playing host to a new event to help promote the feature for which the local environmental advocacy group and the borough take their namesakes -- trees.

The conservancy’s first “A Celebration of Trees” is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Bradford Woods Community Church.

The event will begin with a free lunch at 12:15 p.m. followed by a series of discussions about how to address the borough’s aging trees and the lack of replacement saplings and young trees.

To begin addressing the problem, 100 saplings will be distributed to residents along with posts and fencing to protect them after they have been planted.

Participants can select a sapling from among the following varieties: Red Bud, Black Gum, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Birch and Eastern Red Cedar.

To reserve a sapling, send an email with the tree of your choice to Judith Kasten at: jckasten@earthlink.net.

A program on trees and their importance in green infrastructure is scheduled from 1:30 to 2 p.m. A tree planting demonstration and dedication will be conducted from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

The free saplings will be distributed between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

The church is located at 4836 Wexford Run Road.
