Pittsbugh 85, No. 8 Michigan 78

HONOLULU (AP) _ Jason Maile was 5-of-6 from 3-point range and had 24 points to lead Pittsburgh to an 85-78 victory over No. 8 Michigan on Monday, the Wolverines’ second loss in three games in the Rainbow Classic.

Michigan (9-2) lost its opener to Memphis and then beat Washington State in the consolation round.

Vonteego Cummings added 22 points for Pittsburgh (7-6), which held Michigan without a field goal for a seven-minute stretch in the first half. Cummings scored 10 points during one stretch as Pittsburgh opened a 12-point lead and Chad Varga, who finished with 15 points, scored seven and Maile added another five to make it a 14-point lead. The Panthers led 37-27 at halftime.

The Panthers, who forced 20 turnovers, led by as many as 17 points in the second half.

Louis Bullock led the Wolverines, who entered the tournament undefeated and ranked fourth in the nation, with 23 points, while Robert Traylor had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Michigan’s top scorer, Maurice Taylor, was held to two points before he fouled out.

Foul problems plagued Michigan. Four players, including three starters, were saddled with three fouls in the first half and Taylor and Travis Conlan both got their fourth foul less than a minute into the second half.
