Herd women eye Florida sweep on C-USA road trip
HUNTINGTON — Thursday’s win at Florida Atlantic University wasn’t pretty, with the Marshall University women’s basketball team nearly squandering a 17-point lead before grinding out a 72-67 victory in its first road win this season.
However, Marshall head coach Tony Kemper will take one exactly like it when the Thundering Herd plays a 2 p.m. Saturday game at FIU.
Marshall (9-8, 3-1 Conference USA) wants to continue its success against FIU (3-15, 0-5). Western Kentucky defeated FIU on Thursday, 94-82.
FIU struggles to score, but connected on 53 percent of its field goal attempts and 3-point shots at Western Kentucky. For the season, the Panthers are shooting 38 percent from the floor and 31 percent from the 3-point line while turning the basketball over nearly 18 times a game.
Chelsea Guimares is FIU’s top scorer with a 10.3 average.
Marshall had dropped all six of its road contests before Thursday’s win. The Herd scored 40 in the first 14 minutes, but only 32 in the next 25 minutes that included a stretch of about 10 minutes when FAU used a 19-2 run to tie the game in the fourth quarter after trailing by 17 early in the second half.
Shayna Gore and Taylor Porter led the Marshall scoring with 19 points each. Gore averages 17.9 points a game while Porter is at 11.2.
