Rain forces officials to postpone races at Havasu 95 Speedway

January 7, 2019

Rain hit Lake Havasu for the first time in a month on Saturday night, forcing officials at Havasu 95 Speedway to wave the red flag on the night’s races.

Attempting to start early to avoid the worst of the first significant rainfall since Dec. 6, the track was only able to finish one of six scheduled main events before a steady downpour soaked the 1/4-mile oval and made the rest of the races too dangerous to start.

“It started raining at the tail end of (the factory stocks) race,” Shelly Keirns said. “We had to cancel the show right after.

“We just kept getting a constant mist out there. The cars can’t run on a slippery surface. We kept trying to hold off and hope that Mother Nature would be kind to us. But, it didn’t work out in our favor.”

The track said it will look to fold the rest of the races into its current schedule, running “twin” races later in the season that will see drivers compete twice in the same night. They hoped to also find a place for the Late Model and Bandolero races that were already scheduled for twin races on Saturday.

“We’ll see all the other race tracks’ schedules and see who’s running and where we can fit them in on our schedule,” Keirns said.

Jeff Prieur won his fourth Factory Stocks race of the season in the only completed event of the evening, continuing to expand his lead in the division. Prieur has won all but one race this season, finishing second in the only other outing.

The track was expecting its biggest Late Model race in years, with 24 cars signed up for Saturday’s twin 50-lap races. Also postponed was the second 602 Modifieds race of the season and twin Bandoleros races.

On its website, the track added that tickets and pit passes (except for Factory Stocks) would be honored for its next event. Updates on the postponed races will be posted on havasu95speedway.com.

The next scheduled races are on Jan. 19, headlined by a 75-lap Street Stocks race. Bandoleros, Factory Stocks and the Ray Alcaraz Memorial Sprints and Midgets race will also be held during the night’s races.
