Waterford man revealed as drowning victim
Police have confirmed the identity of the man who drowned Thursday morning in the Big Manistee River.
The name of the deceased is Michael Robert Kovich, 65, of Waterford, according to a release from the Manistee County Sheriff’s Office.
Kovich was in a boat with Tim Babb, 61 of Wabash, Indiana and Jeffery Rains, 53, of Hilliard, Ohio, Thursday morning when they hit a submerged tree and were cast overboard.
A preliminary investigation indicated that no life jackets were worn during the incident, which sheriff’s office deputies responded to at approximately 9:06 Thursday morning.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, police said.
Babb and Rains were treated for hypothermia and released from Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.
An autopsy with the Manistee County Medical Examiner has been scheduled for Kovich.
