Jury selection starts in Latrobe shooting case

August 24, 2018

Opening statements in the murder trial of one of three men charged in connection with a fatal shooting more than two years ago in Latrobe are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.

A Westmoreland County jury was seated Monday to hear evidence in the case against Austin Krinock, 20, of Johnstown.

Krinock is charged with second- and third-degree murder for the Jan. 16, 2016 shooting death of 20-year-old Daniel McNerney following a botched robbery outside of a home on St. Clair Street. Prosecutors said McNerney was not involved in a planned heist of a drug dealer when he attempted to intervene and was shot.

Krinock is not alleged to be the shooter. The prosecution contends he helped plan the robbery and sanitize the murder scene after the shooting.

The trial before Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio is expected to take about a week.

Separate murder trials for two other men -- Zachary McGrath, 23, of Latrobe, whom police said fired the weapon that killed McNerney; and Colin Gearhart, 20, of Latrobe -- are expected to be conducted next year.
