Hospital will pay fine, repayment for Medicare overbilling
CLINTON, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts hospital has settled an investigation with the federal government over Medicare overbilling.
The Telegram & Gazette reports that the Department of Health and Human Services began a two-year investigation into Clinton Hospital when financial irregularities were noticed during merger talks with the UMass Memorial system.
Hospital spokesman Christopher Hendry says the voluntary settlement includes $1.5 million in repaid overpayments and a fine of $800,000.
Hendry says patient safety and services were not affected, and the health system has already budgeted for the fine. Hendry says systems have been put into place to prevent any recurrence of overbilling.
