Athlete Of The Week: Bobby Lugiano, Lake-Lehman Golf
Bobby Lugiano finished third at last year’s District 2 Individual Golf Championships, but he had a felling he would do a little better in 2018.
Then, the Lake-Lehman junior went out and backed it up.
Lugiano won the Class 2A boys gold medal with a 3-over 75 at Elmhurst Country Club last Monday to advance to the regional tournament and earn Citizens’ Voice Athlete of the Week honors.
Q: The day before the tournament, you played a practice round. Did you feel like your game was in the right place or that you needed to make adjustments?
A: I felt like my game was probably good enough to get me into regionals, but I wasn’t completely confident. So, the next day, I wanted to get to the course early so I could work on my swing a little bit. I went through my whole bag, kind of, made sure I had my swing down and it was feeling better.
Q: You had a little trouble on the front nine, but closed strong. How did you recover so well?
A: Basically, the couple bad holes I had, they were mental mistakes. After those holes, I just left it in the past and moved on. I just had to play my game for the rest of the round, and it turned out well for me.
Q: What did it fell like to win gold in such a crowded field?
A: It was awesome. Yeah, it was awesome. I was very happy. I wasn’t sure if I was going to win with my score, but I thought I’d be close.
Q: Based on the way your season has gone, did you think you had a good chance of winning?
A: Compared to everyone else, I pretty much was beating everyone the whole year. So, if I played as good as I did all year, I was in a good spot.
Q: How do you feel going into regionals?
A: I think as long as I feel confident with my swing, I think I could put a really good number out there and move on to states.
