Lamar 91, Arkansas 75
AUSTIN (AP) _ Brenda Hatchett made six 3-point shots and scored 23 points to carry the No. 24 Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 91-75 upset Thursday night of the No. 9 Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in the NCAA women’s Midwest Regional.
Lamar (29-3) will play top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Virginia at 8 p.m. CST Saturday in the regional final. The Cavaliers defeated the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 76-61 in the other semifinal.
The 10th-seeded Lady Cardinals are the lowest seed ever to make it into a regional final.
Lamar had five players in double figures. Uirannah Jackson had 20 points, Bobbie Bean scored 14, Barbara Hickey and Tracie Mosley each scored 11 points, and Ramona Jones added 10.
Delmonica DeHorney led the Lady Razorbacks (28-4) with a season-high 33 points. Sha Hopson added 14 and Sally Moore scored 11 points for the losers.
Lamar, the American South Conference champion, hit 11 of its first 12 shots to surprise the Lady Razorbacks and posted a 48-39 halftime lead despite 24 points by DeHorney, tying a school record.
Hatchett hit three 3-pointers for the Lady Cardinals. She was fouled on her last 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in the half and made the free throw.
The quicker Lady Cardinals ran away from Arkansas in the second half. It’s Lamar’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Arkansas, the SWC champion, got into the regional with a 105-68 victory over Northwestern while Lamar knocked off Louisiana State 93-73.
