FLORENCE, S.C. -- A 61-year-old man from Lake City was the inmate at the Florence County Detention Center who died Thursday.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified him as Erskine McClam. A previous release from the coroner’s office misidentified the victim.

McClam was round unresponsive at 2:40 a.m. and taken by medics with Florence County EMS to a Florence area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

McClam’s body is scheduled for an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina Saturday, according to the coroner’s release.

South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating the death.

McClam was in custody as a result of being arrested by the Lake City Police Department, Maj. Mike Nunn, Florence County Sheriff’s Office, said.

Lake City Police Chief Kipp Coker said he was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct.
