Maxzene wins Belmont feature

NEW YORK (AP) _ Maxzene overpowered favored Memories of Silver in the drive to the wire for a one-length victory in Belmont Park’s Saturday feature, the 54th running of the $200,000, Grade II New York Handicap for fillies and mares 3-and-older.

It was the third win in four starts this year for the 4-year-old filly by Cozzene from the Sexton Blake mare, Jacky Max. It was also her second straight victory for added money. She took Belmont’s Grade II Sheepshead Bay Handicap on June 1.

Memories of Silver was runnerup in the six-horse field, two lengths before Shemozzle.

Maxzene covered 1 1/4 miles in 1:59:4 on the firm Inner Turf Course to earn $120,000 for Ken-Mort Stable.

The winner returned $6.70, $2.50 and $2.10. Memories of Silver paid $2.30 and $2.10 and Shemozzle was $2.10.
