June 18, 2000

PESARO, Italy (AP) _ The U.S. team of Velizar Iliev, Chad Senior and James Gregory won the men’s title at the Modern Pentathlon World Championships Sunday.

Iliev and Senior, sixth and 15th, respectively, in the individual competition won by Andrejus Zadneprovskis of Lithuania, already had earned a berth in the Sydney Olympics prior to the championships.

Gregory did not qualify despite his 10th-place finish in the individual event, as only two athletes from each country get Olympic berths.

The U.S. team had a total of 15,867 points in the five disciplines _ shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running. Poland was second with 15,123 points and Sweden third with 14,295.

In the individual competition, Zadneprovskis beat defending world champion Gabor Balogh of Hungary by 26 points, 5,577 to 5,551.

France’s Sebastien Deleigne, a two-time world champion, finished fifth, with 5,380 points.
