January 30, 2000

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Shaquala Williams scored 10 of her 22 points in the final 2:49 as Oregon upset No. 10 UCLA 67-58 Saturday and ended the Bruins’ seven-game winning streak.

Jamie Craighead added 11 and Angelina Wolvert and Alyssa Fredrick had 10 each for the Ducks (14-5, 5-2 Pacific-10).

Reserve Michelle Greco scored 14 for the Bruins (12-5, 6-1), while Maylana Martin added 11 and Janae Hubbard 10.

Williams broke a 52-52 tie by hitting two free throws after UCLA’s bench received a technical foul for coach Kathy Olivier’s protest of a lane violation call on a free throw.

Williams hit a jump shot and made one of two free throws on the Ducks’ next two possessions and Alyssa Fredrick concluded the 7-0 run with a layup.

Martin’s jump shot with 1:15 left cut Oregon’s lead to 59-54, but Williams hit five consecutive free throws to clinch the victory.

Facing Oregon’s collapsing 2-3 defense, UCLA made just 11 of 40 second-half shots, as it was held under 64 points for only the second time this season. The Ducks entered Saturday’s play allowing a conference-low 61.2 points per game.

The Bruins missed 13 of their 16 3-point shots, including 12 of 14 in the second half.

UCLA held 21-14 and 27-20 first-half leads and were up 31-28 at halftime. Oregon tied it at 35 with 15:32 left, but were unable to go ahead until Brianne Meharry’s two free throws with 4:44 to play gave it a 50-49 advantage.

Martin made the first of two free throws with 2:51 left, tying the score

52-52. She missed the second, the Bruins were called for a lane violation on the rebound, and the technical foul two seconds later.

Martin is seven behind Rehema Stephens for second place on the school’s career scoring list.
