Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Indiana Announces Free Tutoring Program for Children Living in Foster Care

November 14, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 14, 2018--Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Indiana (Anthem) today announced the launch of a new program that will provide free English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts tutoring to Indiana children living in foster care. The tutoring services are available for all children living in foster care aged 4 years old to 21 years old who are enrolled in an Anthem Medicaid plan through Hoosier Healthwise, Hoosier Care Connect or the Healthy Indiana Plan.

The program will be run through a partnership with Educational Tutoring Services (ETS). For all participants, ETS will match each member with an educator who will craft a tutoring plan that is specifically tailored to meet the needs of each individual student, schedule tutoring sessions either in school or at home and provide one-on-one support to grow core competencies to help the students succeed in school. Through this program, Anthem and ETS will also offer support to eligible young adults looking for tutoring on GED services, college prep and placement testing.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to helping consumers and communities, we are constantly seeking opportunities to support programs that not only improve health but enhance overall quality of life for our most vulnerable youth,” said Dr. Kimberly Roop, Medicaid plan president at Anthem Indiana. “By providing youth in foster care with the educational, physical and emotional supports they need, we are able to help remove the social barriers to overall well-being by ensuring children that may need to switch schools are still able to maintain high levels of academic performance.”

The tutoring program is the newest value-added benefit available for Anthem Medicaid consumers. These value-added benefits, which include Memberships to the Boys & Girls Club, Weight Watchers®, the YMCA® and Retrofit™, assistance paying for a cellphone and/or purchasing health care devices, home-delivered meals and home visits for members needing additional support, high-school equivalency exams and more, are specifically designed to improve member health by not only addressing health care needs when an issue arises but by transforming and improving the way our members think about their health on a day-to-day basis.
