Post-chase death investigated

October 10, 2018

The Allen County coroner is investigating the death of a 38-year-old man who died after being involved in a foot chase with police Sunday.

Brent Graber of Peru ran from police after officers closed in on the LKQ Pick Your Part auto parts business at 4820 Moeller Road shortly after 4 p.m., according to a narrative from Fort Wayne police.

Police had received a 911 call reporting that a wanted Miami County suspect was at the business, possibly driving a stolen pickup truck.

The officer arrived to see two women and a man pushing a wheelbarrow toward Graber’s truck, but Graber was still inside the store. He saw the officers and fled out the back door. He ran across the lot, climbed over a security fence, then ran along two sets of railroad tracks with officers chasing him, the police report said.

Graber climbed up some parked rail cars and ran back and forth on top of them, refusing to come down. He eventually climbed into an empty coal car where he was apprehended, and he then collapsed, going into cardiac arrest, police said.

Police officers administered CPR until firefighters arrived to remove him from the rail car. He was taken to a hospital where he died Monday.

The cause and manner of death are pending until further investigation and testing, the coroner’s office said.

The man pushing the wheelbarrow was an employee of the auto parts business. The two women were arrested, one on a warrant and the other for possession of narcotics, the police report said.
